Brandon Sundance Review: Debra Granik to Winter's BoneWinter's Bone is crap in sight. In the tradition of Precious last year, won Winter's Bone the Grand Jury Prize in the Dramatic Competition. It is to see a hard film, both because of its subject matter - a seventeen year old girl is chasing with raising her younger brother and sister while trying their drug dealing father in order to keep instructed her family intact - and because it is only a slow film. All parts of the movie are excellent. The writing is brilliant, and in fact , it won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at Sundance here as well. The direction from Debra Granik is sparse and affecting. And the achievements are impressive, to say the least. But the sum of these parts add up to a bleak, hopeless film unfortunately.
